Psychological development and growth in regards to multicultural and social justice issues is essential due to the growing diversity of the United States, and the increasing stress among marginalized groups in need of care. Mistakes are inevitable, thus continued efforts to confront our areas of ignorance are recommended by numerous scholars. For example, Ngoc Loan Tran has come up with a practice of “Calling In” to assist activists to help one another grow through mistakes. Relational Cultural Therapy (Jordon, 2010) emphasizes the importance of attending to power, privilege, and oppression in therapy, and offers strategic ways to address ruptures that occur. This presentation will define power, privilege, and oppression, and other associated concepts in the realm of multicultural psychology and by psychologists, such as Derald Wing Sue, Ph.D., and will lead participants through experiential activities that allow for in-depth learning of these concepts. Participants will learn models for and practice how to apply concepts directly to their therapeutic work. This presentation provides information that is pertinent to providing therapy that aligns with the APA Ethics Code (2002).
